Okay... I've got a trade! I'd love to trade for the IPOD, my full set of pearls. This includes a 16 inch pearl necklace, a 7 inch pearl bracelet, and a set of pearl earrings. The necklace and bracelet have never been worn, and the earrings have only been worn a few times and will be cleaned before trading. They are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

I didn't have the pearls appraised officially, but when I got them I had a friend who was a jeweler look at them. She said, her estimate (on their worth) was over $600.00

This jewelry is very special to me, because it was presented to me the night I won my first Miss America Organization local preliminary title - Miss Gadsden Area. I have been saving them for a special occasion, not wearing them for fear of losing them... how ironic, huh? But, I figure, what good is it to have them locked away?

I'm adding (to my pearls) my set of Mystic Topaz earrings. I don't know how many carats, but they're roughly 5/16" by 1/4" and set in 14 K gold. The gems are green and purple. They were also presented to me the night I won my first Miss America Organization local preliminary title- so they (along with the pearls) have a lot of sentimental value.

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Matthew 6:20-21

My heart is in Uganda, and it's beeping for the Invisible Children! Please let me know if you want to trade!

Let me know again~

Thanks

The Third Trade

So after all that jazz- we have exciting news to report...the third trade will be taking place this week! Mr. Rountree’s bass guitar will be traded for a 20 GB ipod, with speakers and a car stereo dock and charger, graciously donated by the University of Alabama’s very own Ryan Spain. Along with the trade, Ryan wrote a poem about Invisible Children, reflecting how much this cause has effected his life. So- we leave you with his beautiful writing and a few words from his original post:

Uganda, My Love

here i've seen huddled children
in leaking basements
with tattered blankets
hiding in the damp black
safe underground
away from their mothers
with whom they are doomed
to be stolen and to die.

in the arid land
not knowing a time
without the memory of war -
there haunt
great writhing sphinxes
whose rhythmic puzzles
leech life from children
riddled with disease
or fearing for their lives
some of the luckiest
quietly dead in the street.

hold still
quiet
angels of the cellars
i will help you

“I am very excited about this project, and I hope this offer helps. I can't wait to see how far this advances! I just want to thank everyone for their interest and participation in this project. I admire all of you.”

We Need Your Help!

Hello again!!! Not only is this your new update, this is our HUGE CRY FOR HELP! We've had so many people say they want to participate in the game but say they have nothing to trade. But when you really sit down and think about it, this isn't true. Through Invisible Children we are realizing how much people have in their lives to give.

In order to make One Red Bracelet a success we need for you to think of creative ways to give what you have. Have you guys checked out the One Red Paper Clip site? His success was made possible through people's creative trades- a vintage doorknob to an all-expense paid trip to Yahk.

We are asking for your TIME and CREATIVITY. Take advantage of the resources around you and any connections you may have. Tell those people about the project and ask them if they might have something to trade. If you feel like you can't contribute material objects, donate your time. Take the time to tell people about One Red Bracelet in creative ways:
-tell the local news, your college campus paper, blimp factories, chalk the sidewalks, write it on bathroom stalls, tattoo it on your forehead, carve it in the wet cement of new sidewalks...do WHATEVER it takes to get the message out and become part of the movement that has already begun.

The Second Trade

"The bowl up for trade really means a lot to me personally. I took communion from it with several good friends and (a few new ones) over the Christmas break during a Taize service. The experience of that weekend made a pretty big impression on my life.

Now then, with that in mind I'd like to offer my electric bass as a trade for the quaich. Its in mint condition and sounds great. I will throw in the necessary accessories (gig bag, strap, etc.) as well."

-Benjamin Roundtree
Tuscaloosa, Alabama

The trade we'll be making is with Mr. Benjamin Rountree, who has offered his electric bass in exchange for the quaich. You can check out his post under the discussion topic Second Trade on the group page.

If you posted an item, sent me a message, or somehow communicated to me that you had an item to offer for the second trade, please consider reposting your item under the topic of Third Trade. This is really the best way to let me know that you're interested; it's really hard for me to keep up with all of the wonderful offers that you've all made. This will also make it easier for everyone else in the group to see what you've offered; maybe you'll inspite someone else to trade something as well!

We'll be looking to make the third exchange sometime in the next week.

For those of you who are just interested in donating your item for the cause, we're thinking about setting up an Ebay seller's account that would go directly to IC. We'd like to photograph the items that are sold through this account and make a scrap book of your reason for giving up your possessions and donating the money to Invisible Children. Please contact us if you're interested!

Thanks so much!

Lindsey

Monica's Story

Hi Lindsey,

It's past the 29th, so perhaps you've already made the first trade. But if not, I'd like to offer a trade for the red bracelet...

During my travels this summer, I found myself in Edinburgh, Scotland. I like to purchase either a piece of jewelry or a piece of art whenever possible when traveling to a new place. In Edinburgh I happened upon a store with a glass case full of Quaiches, and I purchased one as my piece of art to take back to the States. Quaiches are the Scottish friendship cup. The one I have is made of pewter, and I'd like to offer it as a trade.

The tradition of the Quaich began in the days when people didn't trust one another, and everyone carried around his or her own drinking cup. The traditional two handles on opposite sides of the cup were put there so the cup could easily hang from a belt or a saddle.

The Quaich then began to be used ceremoniously at events such as weddings and baptisms. Everyone in the room would drink from the same Quaich as a sign of trust in the gathered community.

What you all have started with "One Red Bracelet" demonstrates an extraordinary amount of trust...trust that the world will awaken to the fact that we do indeed all drink from the same cup...trust that the thirst for justice and peace can be satisfied.

Peace and light,
Monica

The First Trade

Ladies and gentlemen, we are on our way! We made our first trade this week; Monica Romano traded us a Scottish cup, called a Quaich, for the red bracelet. Check out the discussion board and the pictures for more details and for a back-story on what a Quaich actually is.
We are absolutely overwhelmed and tremendously excited about all of your trade offers. We are absolutely touched at your offerings. Y'all are incredible.
We're going to decide on our second trade this Saturday, and we'll be sure to update you as soon as we know which one we decide on.
Actually, you should expect a lot of updates throughout this project, because a big part of this is documentation. We're working really hard to keep creative records of everything involved so that after this turns out to be wildly successful :), we'll be able to really assist anyone else who wants to start a similar project. Because we're documenting all of the items offered, even if we don't trade for them, it would really be a great help to us if you could offer trades through the discussion boards.
For instance, if you're trading for the Quaich, post under the heading of Second Trade. If you'd like to offer an item a second time, that's wonderful, and we would love for you to just copy, paste, and repost under the next number. This way we can also keep up with which trades are still available each week, and y'all can keep up with our progress more easily.

Thank you SO much for all of your enthusiasm and help! We're off to a tremendous start, and it's all thanks to you!

One Red Bracelet

First of all, if you don't know what Invisible Children is yet, then please please please check out their website: www.invisiblechildren.com or email us at: oneredbracelet@gmail.com

Some of you may have heard of the the One Red Paperclip project. If you haven't, well, you're in luck, because I'm about to tell you about it!

The project started with this guy who decided that, starting with one red paper clip, he would "trade up" until he got a house. And, in 14 trades, he did it! You can read all about it at http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com.

Got it? Check. Ok, so, now Sarah, Allison, and I are playing the same game, only we are starting with One Red Bracelet. One red Invisible Children bracelet, to be exact.

Over the next 2 months or so, we'll be trading the bracelet in for bigger and better and more valuable things every week, and then in April we're going to take whatever we've traded up to, sell it, and donate the money to Invisible Children.

We really really appriciate any help that you can give us! Any tips or trade suggestions or words of encouragement would be so SO wonderful.
